Love Ottomans? 6 Things To Consider + Ottoman Giveaway!

Ottoman — A low upholstered seat or footstool, without a back or arms. A place to prop your feet up, set your book down, or place a tray of drinks.

I LOVE ottomans, they are super versatile and can serve as coffee tables, footstools, benches, side tables, and storage units. They can be a fun shape, and make a statement. Using ottomans, poufs, or benches in the homes we design is particularly perfect for our relaxed mountain lifestyle.

Take a look at these 6 things to consider when adding ottomans to your living spaces.

1. Legs or No Legs?

Technically, without legs it’s a Pouf. Best without legs for a smaller footstool – easier to move around. Larger ones may have legs or a platform that could make them more versatile. Pro tip — cover your ottoman base with a skirt if you are looking for a more traditional look.

2. Shape

It’s always best to try to use a shape that works with your seating, like in the examples below.

3. Matching or Not

Some chairs have matching ottomans. But you may want something smaller or just coordinating. Do you want it to blend in, or make a statement?

4. Material

Fabric, leather, fur, or faux?  Make sure it’s durable. Leather or faux leather are always a great choice, but fur, faux fur, or even fringes, can really make a statement. You can always add casters, skirts, buttons, or whatever accents your space! Take a look at this fun furry ottoman, this is a style that I would love to use in a future project!

5. Storage

Some benches and ottomans double as storage space or have shelves. If you have extra blankets or pillows not in use, an ottoman at the end of the bed is a must. Need somewhere to place the bed shams at night? A simple bench will do.

6. Accessorize

Adding a tray on top? It’s nice if the tray is purposefully the same shape as your ottoman. This will bring the two pieces together nicely.

I know choosing the perfect ottoman can be overwhelming – but knowing what your needs are — either storage, style, or both! — will make it easier to choose. Most importantly, have fun with it!
